What is a QR code?
A QR code is a black-and-white pattern that encodes a short piece of text — usually a web address. It is read optically: a camera looks at it, software decodes it, and the phone offers to open the link.
There is no chip, no battery and no radio involved. It is ink on a surface, which is why it keeps working for years as long as it stays visible and reasonably clean.
What is NFC?
NFC — near-field communication — is a very short-range radio link, a couple of centimetres at most. It is the same family of technology as contactless payment and office door badges.
An NFC sticker holds a passive chip with no battery: the phone powers it when it comes close. The chip hands back a web address, and the phone offers to open it.
How QR scanning works in practice
- The person opens the camera app and points it at the code.
- On iPhones and the large majority of recent Android phones the link is recognised without any dedicated app, provided the phone supports QR scanning.
- They tap the notification, and the page opens in the browser.
Older phones may still need a reader app. The other limitation is legibility: a code that is torn, heavily scratched or covered in mud will not decode.
How an NFC tap works in practice
- The person holds the back of their phone within a centimetre or two of the tag.
- The phone has to have NFC hardware, and the feature has to be switched on — on some models it is off by default.
- A notification appears, and the page opens in the browser.
It is faster and works in the dark, but you have to know where to tap — which is a real problem when nobody has seen the object before.

Neither is universally better. QR reaches the widest range of phones; NFC gives the quickest interaction where it is supported.
Why AutoAide uses both
In an emergency you do not get to choose the phone of the person helping. Offering both simply removes one more reason for a technical detail to block access to information.

That is redundancy and accessibility, not a guarantee. No physical tag can promise to work in every circumstance.
A realistic scenario
A motorcyclist comes off alone on a quiet road and cannot speak. A driver stops, calls the emergency number and correctly leaves the helmet alone.
She notices the sticker on the fuel tank and scans it with her camera. If her phone supports NFC, she could also just hold it against the marked area. Either way the same page opens: the rider's chosen name, a blood-thinning medication, two numbers to call.
Nothing happened automatically. Help came because she called; the page only made findable what the rider had chosen to share.
What about privacy?
Neither QR nor NFC protects or exposes anything on its own — both are just ways of opening an address. What matters is the destination page and the fields it shows.
